The Resting Metabolic Rate Test
Accurately measuring your oxygen uptake while resting will tell you exactly how many calories you would burn in a 24 hour period if you did nothing but sit in a chair. This requires a precise measurement of the volume of expired air and of the concentrations of oxygen in the inspired and expired air. The process requires that all of the air a person breathes out be collected and analyzed while they rest quietly. The test takes about 10 minutes to complete. Once the breathing is analyzed and the factors of humidity, temperature, and relative humidity are accounted for, the Korr CardioCoach provides the most accurate results available in a non-medical setting.
The VO2Max Test
VO2Max is an abbreviation for Volume of Oxygen (02) Maximum uptake. It is technically defined as a measurement of "milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of bodyweight." VO2Max is generally considered the the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. The VO2Max test itself measures the maximum rate of oxygen consumption that cane attained during the most intense exercise possible. This requires that the subject breathe into the oxygen mask analyzer during an all out effort, usually on a treadmill, erg, stationary bike, or road bike with indoor trainer setup, as part of a graded exercise test protocol (GXT.) This determines how much oxygen was used during each minute of the test.
Oxygen consumption rises linearly as exercise intensity increases, up to a point. There are specific physiological markers that can be measured throughout the test as oxygen consumption is measured. When the subject is no longer able to keep up with the oxygen demands of their muscles and complete fatigue forces them to stop exercising, oxygen consumption has reached a maximum and VO2Max can be measured. The test usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes.
The CardioCoach App
The CardioCoach VO2Max App by Korr is a free, downloadable smartphone app that allows BioFit Philly to upload your individual VO2Max test results, allowing you to view YOUR results in the context of workout zones, goals, and energy balance.
Coupled with a heart rate monitor worn during exercise, the app will show minutes spent aerobic versus anaerobic, and the actual number of calories burned during a workout and post-workout (EPOC.)
For clients working with a trainer, each workout done on your own can be stored and instantly emailed to your trainer, making recording and accountability easy and accurate.
